Everyone must have heard the phrase “Let’s get this bread” online a lot of times. It generally means to grind and succeed. But it has a very unique origin.
Bread and salt was the food of the working class in France. But the grain crops failed two years in a row, 1788 and 1789. As a result price of bread shot up. The working class blamed the ruling class for the economic upheaval and famine.
So on 14th of July, 1789 which is also known as Bastille day, the French workers and common people gathered and started chanting, “allons chercher ce pain” which roughly translates to “let us go get this bread” since there was a shortage of bread.
That is how the now commonly used slang originated. It was the french who invented it.
