Top 5 Picks for Retro Gaming

So What is Retro Gaming?

Retro gaming typically involves one of three main activities; vintage retrogaming, retrogaming emulation, and ported retrogaming. Vintage retrogaming involves games that are played on the original hardware. Emulation involves newer systems simulating old gaming systems, while ported retro gaming allows games to be played on modern hardware.

Some History on Retro gaming

Retro gaming has been around since the early years of the video game industry, but has become much more relevant within the past few years due to the increased availability of Retro Gaming Consoles via online stores and retailers.  It is argued that the main reasons people are drawn to retro gaming is the nostalgia from different eras, the idea that older/classic games are more innovative and original, and the simplicity of the older games that requires less hours of gameplay.

Participants in the hobby are sometimes known as retrogamers in the UK, while the terms “classic gamers” or “old school gamers” are more prevalent in the US. Similarly, the games are known as retrogames, classic games or old school games.

What are the Best Retro Gaming Games and Consoles?

We’ve all seen the Retro Gaming Consoles advertised in our Facebook feed, sold in the middle of the mall and sold in major retail stores during the holidays. There have been some pretty nice systems and there have been some that are generic, cheaply made systems.  The cheaply made systems sometimes have lag when you press buttons on the controller or they just breakdown after a few months of play. However recently I’ve seen a trend of really nice retro gaming consoles, systems and games being put out on the market. Most of these systems are actually being made by the original companies that created the systems back in the early gaming days. So what are the Best Retro Gaming Consoles/Systems?

1st Place Goes To The Nintendo Switch Gaming Console

The newest home video game system from Nintendo. This system can be used on your TV at home or it can be taken on the go so players can enjoy a full home console experience anytime and anywhere. The versatility of a handheld gaming system is now added to the power of a home gaming system, with unprecedented new play styles brought to you by the two new Joy-Con controllers.

Why does the Nintendo Switch get the #1 spot?

It is a new age gaming system that allows you to purchase a lot of the classic games that you grew up playing but still offers a new line of modern games. So you kind of get the best of both worlds in a new reliable state of the art gaming console.

The Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Edition is also a must have with this system. I’m not sure that I know any other 80s kids who didn’t spend a good portion of their childhood playing the Street Fighter games.

Overall thoughts

It’s really an awesome thing that gaming manufacturers decided to come out with these systems and games.  Most people love things like this that take them back to a simpler time in life like when you just hung out with your pals and played video games.  Since owning these systems I’ve been able to play games that I haven’t played in years and I’ve been able to share these gaming experiences with my kids. Ranking these systems almost becomes unnecessary when you realize that they are all awesome and it just makes sense to own them all.
